We are on the cusp of the Superbowl of politics. This upcoming election cycle will give political enthusiasts all of the thrills and chills of the real gridiron classic. During these contest for elected office, voters will have to examine the candidates and cast their ballot for the person they consider best suited for positions of power. Voters will also have to look closely to see if what their candidate says is what they really believe.
Quite often politicians, from either major political party, campaign on one set of principles, yet govern with a vastly different point of view. Such have become known as either RINO’s republicans, in name only, or DINO’s, democrats in name only. These dubious politicians seem to want to straddle the political fence attempting to please both sides. We may wonder whether there are any CINO’s, Christians in name only, out there today.
In pronouncing woes on the Pharisees Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness” (Matthew 23:27). Jesus plainly explained that these so called leaders were not at all what they portrayed themselves to be. In the church today, there may well be those who are like the Pharisees, or as we might say, Christians in name only.
Such a pretend Christianity will not sustain one for long. In Luke 6:49, Jesus teaches that those who hear His word, even perhaps those hearing it from a pew every Sunday, and do it not are building a house on sand. He goes on to say that such a person will ultimately fall.
As members of the Lord’s Church, we must walk the walk as well as talk the talk. We must be Christians in action as well as name. Rather than live our lives so as to appear to be spiritual in the eyes of men, we must strive to be so even when the only one who sees is Jesus.
