The Apostle Paul encouraged the young evangelist Timothy to “be diligent to show himself approved to God” (2 Timothy 2:15). In this context the approval was on the basis of Bible knowledge. Peter admonished the faithful that they be “always ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope in them” (1 Peter 3:15).

Such commandments are also written to us. We should be the go to people for our neighbors and friends who have a Bible question. In a world so full of religious confusion and division it is a very good thing that subject matter experts are around to provide clarity in religious matters. Members of the Church of Christ should be those who are known for having such a grasp of the Word of God.

On a couple of recent occasions I have been asked religious questions by various people who were not members of the church. In each case the question led to a discussion allowing for subjects such as the one church and adherence to the written word to be addressed. Such instances probably happen to all Christians as they go about their daily business. The point is that each one of us should continually be devoted to diligent Bible study as opportunities can present themselves anytime.

It goes without saying that our preaching must be done in love (Ephesians 4:15). Moreover we must be aware that many of our religious neighbors disagree with the plain teaching of scripture. However, we like Paul must not be ashamed of the Gospel (Romans 1:16) because by it souls can be saved. We must therefore always be ready to give an answer for our hope.
