The Bible teaches us to "prove all things" (1 Thess.5:21).  We are also admonished to "try the spirits whether they are of God." (1 John 4:1).  The people of Berea were commended for searching the scriptures "whether those things were so." (Acts 17:11).  That is, they did not take Paul's word for what he was preaching; they compared his preaching to what was written. This is something we must also do.  Never place your faith or your salvation on the teaching of men; only upon a "thus saith the Lord."(see Matt. 15:9).  Let us make some comparisons between the doctrines of men and what the Bible teaches.

Concerning the question "what must I do to be saved?" there is a direct conflict between the doctrines of men and what the Bible teaches.   I recall as a child back in the 1940s, during WWII, when preachers would put the fear of the Lord in me by talking about soldiers dying in Europe and in Asia, inferring that we too faced potential death from the Germans and the Japanese.  The preacher would invite people to "come down to the altar and pray through."  He gave no Bible example of this.  He would say things like, "let Jesus come into your heart and save you."  He would not explain how this is to be done.  I recall being confused because I surely did not want to be lost.  He would also say, "if you are saved you will know it by the feeling you have in your heart."  I desired that feeling but it never came.  Never did any of these preachers quote the Savior's words just prior to His ascension where Jesus said, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved..." (Mark 16:15-15).  Now, this is something I could have understood even as a child.

I also recall hearing preachers say "choose the church of your choice."  I remember being troubled over my uncle Glen, for whom I was named, driving by our church house to attend another church down the road from where we worshiped.  I wondered, "why can't we all worship together?" I was sixteen years of age when I heard a preacher quote Ephesians 4:3-6 and say "there is but one church for which Jesus died and we all must be saved and added to that one church."  He gave scripture for everything he preached. I could read what he preached in my Bible and it made sense. Like the noble Bereans we must search the scriptures to know the truth.
