There must have been something special about the Christians at Rome for Paul declares of them “your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world” (Romans 1:9). Likewise of those who were members of the church at Thessalonica Paul said “you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe” (1 Thessalonians 1:7). What was it about these two congregations that garnered such praise from this great Apostle?
Of the Thessalonian Christians, Paul noted their work of faith, labor of love and patience of hope (1 Thessalonians 1:3). Furthermore, he explained how they had “received the word in much affliction with joy” (1 Thessalonians 1:6). Coupling these two things together it becomes clear how they became an example to others in that their faith was made perfect by their works (James 2:22). When our faith is made perfect, or complete, through our works being motivated by love then the world will take notice of us too. Jesus called this letting our light shine (Matthew 5:16).
Paul wrote to the Christians at Rome Paul that he longed to see them so that among other things he might be encouraged together with them by their mutual faith (Romans 1:12). He also says in Romans 5:1-3 that through this faith they have peace with God and they glory in tribulations which produce perseverance. If Christians experience tribulation it is probable that they at some point have demonstrated faith by works.
Therefore the world will see our faith just as it did the faith of those Christians at Rome and Thessalonica when we put our hands to the work. This sentiment has been expressed in this manner, “I’d rather see a sermon lived than to hear one preached”. The world, whether we are always aware of it or not, is watching us. Let us resolve then to always be seen doing the work of faith, laboring in love and patient in the hope of our Lord Jesus Christ.
